Privacy Policy

Effective November 2, 2026

PurplePain is a pain journal for iPhone and Apple Watch made by Josh Clark (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the PurplePain app and this website.

The short version: your journal stays on your devices. We don't have accounts, servers that store your entries, analytics, ads or tracking. We never see, sell or share your journal.

Your journal

Everything you enter (pain ratings, descriptions, notes, sleep, mood, activity, food, liner notes and the weather saved with each day) is stored only on your iPhone, using Apple's on-device storage. It is not sent to us or anyone else.

Apple Health

Connecting Apple Health is optional. If you allow it, PurplePain reads sleep (including sleep stages), steps, exercise minutes, walking and running distance, flights climbed, active energy, stand hours and workouts to fill in your daily entries. PurplePain never writes to Apple Health.

Health information is used only to show in your journal. It stays on your device and is never sent to us, shared with third parties, or used for advertising or marketing. You can change or remove access at any time in the Health app or in Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices. Turning off access stops new readings; values already copied into your journal stay there until you delete them or the app.

Location and weather

Adding weather is optional. If you allow location access “While Using the App”, PurplePain gets your approximate location (to about a kilometer) at most about once an hour while the app is open, and sends the latitude, longitude and your time zone to Open-Meteo, a weather service, to look up the day's forecast. Like any web service, Open-Meteo also receives your IP address with the request. See Open-Meteo's privacy policy.

Your location is not saved in your journal and is not sent to us. Only the resulting weather (condition, temperature and humidity) is saved with the day. You can turn off location access at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

Reminders

Check-in reminders are scheduled on your device. Nothing about them is sent to us.

Purchases

The optional Full History subscription is sold and managed by Apple through the App Store. Apple handles payment, and we don't receive your payment details, name or email. The app checks your purchase with Apple on your device to decide what history to show. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your App Store account settings.

What we don't collect

PurplePain has no sign-up or account. The app contains no analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking tools, and we don't share or sell information to anyone. If you choose to share crash reports or diagnostics with developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may provide us with anonymous, aggregated reports under Apple's own terms.

Deleting your data

Because your journal lives on your device, you're in control of it. You can delete individual notes in the app, and deleting PurplePain from your iPhone removes its data from that device. Data in older device backups is removed according to how you manage those backups.

This website

purplepain.app does not use cookies, analytics or tracking. Like most websites, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs (such as IP address, browser type and pages requested) for security and to keep the site running.

Children

PurplePain is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Medical disclaimer

PurplePain is a personal journal. It does not diagnose conditions or provide medical advice or treatment recommendations.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update it on this page and change the effective date above. If a change affects how your information is handled, we'll also note it in the app's release notes.
